This archive contains a setext version of The Jargon File, version 4.0.0, of July 24, 1996.
The Jargon File is a public domain "comprehensive compendium of hacker slang illuminating many aspects of hackish tradition, folklore, and humor". Its current volunteer editor is Eric Raymond <esr@snark.thyrsus.com>. Version 4.0.0 corresponds to the text of [Raymond, E. S. (1996) "The New Hacker's Dictionary, 3rd ed." MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 547 pp. ISBN 0262181789.]
The Jargon File is also available online at <http://www.eps.mcgill.ca/~steeve/tnhd.html>
The text is in 8-bit Mac encoding, without line endings: a carriage return indicates the end of a paragraph.
Setext is a slightly enhanced text format. It can be read with any text editor/word processor, but looks best when viewed with a setext-compatible browser, such as Akif Eyler's EasyView <info-mac/text/easy-view-262.hqx>.
If you have already installed EasyView just double-click on the "jargon.view" file (you may need to rebuild your desktop first). You may need first to increase EasyView's RAM allocation (1024K is a good figure), because of the size of the file.
This archive is free for non-commercial uses and may be included on CD-ROMs. If you consider that the time spent in converting it to setext is worth some recognition, make a donation to your favourite charity.
